YYC Partners with Altitude Infrastructure Group on Major Runway Project

| Catgories:

CALGARY- Rehabilitation of one of Canada’s busiest runways is set to take off now that The Calgary Airport Authority has selected Altitude Infrastructure Group (AIG), an unincorporated partnership between Colas (via Standard General Inc. and Colas Projects Canada Inc.) and SNC-Lavalin to provide subcontracted professional services for the planning and design phase of this multi-year, multi-phase project.

Announced in August 2021, this $115 million major construction project is receiving $57.5 million from the federal Airport Critical Infrastructure Program to ensure YYC Calgary International Airport can continue operating safely and efficiently for decades into the future.

“A project of this scale and cost is a critical part of YYC’s future as one of Canada’s busiest travel and cargo hubs,” said Chris Miles, VP Operations & Infrastructure. “Standard General, Colas Projects, and SNC-Lavalin have proven reputations for delivering efficient, high quality and safe results. We look forward to collaborating with them on the next phase of this project.”

The west runway was originally constructed in 1939 and designed for aircraft lighter than those used today. Numerous projects have been completed over the past 80 years to maintain the structural capacity and to prolong the runway’s lifespan. However, studies completed in recent years have confirmed the runway will be reaching the end of its useful life and that a full rehabilitation is necessary.

The scope of the project includes the removal and replacement of the west runway, which involves full-depth structural and electrical rehabilitation. At the same time, the runway environment will also be modernized, including approaches, lighting, and infrastructure.

“As longstanding experts in airport infrastructure, we are truly proud to be part of this overhaul project on a runway that is a cornerstone of Alberta’s economy and tourism industry," underlines Stéphane Brondino, Project Manager for Colas Projects.

Planning and design phases will take place in 2022 with construction expected in 2023 and 2024, creating up to 300 local jobs.

Altitude Infrastructure Group was selected following a competitive request for qualifications (RFQ) and request for proposal (RFP) process.
