The Calgary Airport Authority takes important step in West Runway Rehabilitation Project

With planning and design complete, the Authority has selected PCL Construction as construction approaches.

Calgary, Alberta – The Calgary Airport Authority (the Authority) after extensive evaluation has selected PCL Construction (PCL) as the Construction Manager for the West Runway Rehabilitation.

With construction anticipated to begin in 2024, the Authority is partnering with PCL on the next steps in this significant project that will create over 300 temporary construction jobs and bolster YYC Calgary International Airport (YYC) as a major economic driver for decades to come.

“The West Runway Rehabilitation is a keystone project for YYC and will play a pivotal role in the long-term success of our airport and the greater Calgary region,” said Chris Miles, Chief Operating Officer for The Calgary Airport Authority. “Given PCL’s depth of experience, the Authority is confident in their ability to help contribute to this historic project in a safe and efficient manner.”

“Our team of industry-leading construction experts will ensure the airport’s world-class guest experience is maintained while we strategically rebuild one of three critical runways,” said Alistair McKnight, PCL’s district manager for Calgary and southern Alberta. “We are grateful for the Authority’s continued trust and partnership with PCL as we embark on this important project with them.”

With sustainability as a priority, the Authority is proud to be working with PCL as well as contractors and consultants to deliver Canada’s first airport project to be certified under the Envision® framework for sustainable infrastructure. Envision is a comprehensive framework for incorporating sustainability into the design, construction and operation of infrastructure systems and projects.

Projects of this magnitude require the expertise from several contractors with varying areas of specialization. The Authority has worked with various teams on design, planning and now with PCL as they bring their decades long experience to help execute on this major runway rehabilitation project.
