Repairs to Concourse B expected to take a minimum of 18 months

Repairs to Concourse B expected to take a minimum of 18 months
| Catgories:

Calgary, Alberta – Following an assessment of damage caused by the devastating Aug. 5, 2024, hailstorm, The Calgary Airport Authority now anticipates Concourse B at YYC Calgary International Airport will remain closed for a minimum of 18 months while restoration work is undertaken. The total cost of repairs is not yet known.

“Early investigations have shown that Concourse B, located in the Domestic Terminal Building, sustained very significant damage – initially from the golf-ball-sized hail puncturing the roof membrane, and then from the subsequent heavy rainfall entering the building,” said Chris Miles, Chief Operating Officer of The Authority. “We have completed the initial remediation work and are now developing a comprehensive plan to repair the roof and interior of Concourse B.”

Despite the closure of YYC’s Concourse B and its gates (gates 31-40), The Authority does not foresee any impact to guests or airport operations while this area remains out of service. While there was some damage to other parts of the terminal, those areas have since been returned to regular operations.

“We are pleased to report that there should be no impact to our guests and passengers, as we have been able to accommodate all flights through other parts of the terminal,” said Chris Dinsdale, The Authority’s President & CEO. “We are open for business.”

No guests or airport staff were injured during the storm, which also damaged commercial aircraft at YYC as well as homes and vehicles across parts of northeast Calgary. We encourage guests to get in touch with their airline for flight updates as there may be ongoing impacts to flight schedules.

“I am immensely proud of how YYC Crew responded to what was a very challenging situation. We handled it safely and without incident,” added Miles.

The Authority is working to relocate and provide support for as many YYC business partners impacted by the closure of Concourse B as possible. We will share additional updates as we finalize our plans for restoration work.
